Process Characteristics of Cold-Rolled and Hot-Rolled Titanium Sheets

The production of TITANIUM SHEETS is primarily divided into two main processes: hot rolling and cold rolling. Each has its own distinct characteristics in terms of raw materials, processing procedures, product performance, and application areas. This article provides a systematic overview of the production processes, key techniques, and final product characteristics of cold-rolled and hot-rolled titanium sheets.

I. Production Process of Cold-Rolled Titanium Sheets:

Cold-rolled titanium sheets are produced from hot-rolled titanium coils. After pickling to remove scale, the material undergoes continuous cold rolling, resulting in hardened coils. Due to the work hardening effect caused by continuous cold deformation, the strength and hardness of the cold-rolled hard-rolled coils increase, while their plasticity and toughness decrease, resulting in deteriorated stamping performance. Therefore, they can only be used for parts requiring simple deformation.

To eliminate work hardening and rolling stresses, cold-rolled sheets and coils typically undergo continuous annealing (in a CAPL line) or bell annealing to meet the mechanical property requirements specified in relevant standards. Key advantages of cold-rolled titanium sheets: · Superior surface quality, appearance, and dimensional accuracy compared to hot-rolled sheets; · Product thickness can be rolled as thin as approximately 0.18 mm, making them highly popular among users.

II. Production Process for Hot-Rolled Titanium Sheets

Hot-rolled titanium sheets are produced using continuously cast slabs or hot-rolled slabs as raw material. After being heated in a step-heating furnace, the material undergoes high-pressure water descaling before entering the roughing mill. The rough-rolled material is then trimmed at both ends and fed into the finishing mill, where computer-controlled rolling is performed.

Conclusion:

Cold-rolled titanium sheets and hot-rolled titanium sheets each have their own processing characteristics and applications. Cold-rolled titanium sheets, with their superior surface quality, high dimensional accuracy, and capability to produce thin gauges, are suitable for high-end, value-added products; hot-rolled titanium sheets, on the other hand, offer advantages in terms of thick gauges and cost control, while hot-rolled pickled coil serves as an intermediate product that combines performance with cost-effectiveness. Understanding the differences in their manufacturing processes facilitates appropriate material selection to meet the diverse demands for titanium sheet products across various industries.
