Why are the titanium alloy connecting rod becoming popular in industry field?

Apr 28, 2026

Titanium alloys possess high strength (tensile strength up to 900-1200 MPa) and low density (approximately 4.5 g/cm³, only 60% of that of steel), significantly reducing inertial forces in moving parts and improving engine response speed.

They also exhibit excellent corrosion resistance and high-temperature stability (operating temperatures up to 400-500°C), making them suitable for harsh engine operating conditions.

Typical grades include Ti-6Al-4V (Gr5) and Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-6Mo, whose mechanical properties can be further optimized through heat treatment.

Application Scenarios

High-performance automotive engines: Used in racing cars and supercars to reduce crankshaft load and increase the maximum engine speed (e.g., F1 racing car engines can reach speeds of over 15,000 rpm).

Aerospace engines: Used in the power systems of helicopters, fighter jets, etc., to replace steel connecting rods, reducing overall weight and improving fuel efficiency.

High-end motorcycles: Used in large-displacement engines to reduce vibration and improve handling performance.

Design Considerations and Challenges

1. Stiffness Compensation Design
Since the elastic modulus of titanium alloy is approximately half that of steel, local thickness increases are needed to compensate for the difference in stiffness compared to steel connecting rods.

2. Cost Factors
High raw material costs: Titanium raw materials are several times more expensive than steel.
High processing costs: Significant tool wear, processing speed is 60-80% lower than steel.
The price of titanium alloy connecting rods is approximately 4-5 times that of steel racing car connecting rods.

3. Mass Production Progress
Cost reduction can be achieved through:
Using inexpensive alloying elements to replace expensive ones.
Optimizing hot working processes (e.g., hot-rolled coils).
Improving machinability (e.g., Ti-5Al-1Fe).
Employing efficient processes such as fracture separation.

In summary, titanium alloy connecting rods are key components for achieving lightweighting in high-performance engines. Their core value lies in: extreme weight reduction (30-40%), significantly reducing reciprocating inertial mass; excellent fatigue resistance, adapting to high-speed cyclic loading; and good corrosion resistance, extending service life. Despite their higher cost, with the development of low-cost titanium alloys (such as Ti-5Al-1Fe and Super-TIX™ series) and efficient processing technologies, titanium alloy connecting rods are expanding from racing cars and high-end motorcycles to a wider range of mass-produced vehicles. There is still continuous room for technological development in improving the modulus of elasticity and further reducing manufacturing costs.
