Achieving an aesthetically pleasing finish on titanium products relies on a wide variety of surface treatment techniques. In this article, we explore seven key surface treatment processes for titanium-let's see how many you are already familiar with!

1. Sandblasting: This process is primarily functional in nature. It creates a uniform, matte, frosted surface that retains the natural color of the titanium. The finish offers a consistent, textured feel and excellent wear resistance; it is typically used for medical devices, tools, outdoor gear, and industrial applications.

2. Anodizing: This process provides a rich, stable range of colors while preserving the underlying material's texture. It is suitable for applications in sports equipment, eyewear, watches, medical devices, electronics, and aerospace. It also allows for a broader spectrum of colors and patterns-offering high levels of product differentiation-with options such as crystalline (ice-crystal) effects, spiral patterns, and more.
Most titanium products are colored using the anodizing process, though they typically require additional surface treatments afterward for protection. For instance, in the case of the iPhone 15 Pro, the three colors other than the natural titanium silver-black, white, and blue-are all achieved through anodizing.

3. Mirror Polishing: This finish offers an exceptionally high-gloss, mirror-like reflection and a very smooth tactile feel. However, it has relatively poor wear resistance and is typically used for high-end jewelry, luxury goods, and trophies.

4. Brushed Finish: The surface of titanium can be treated with a brushed finish to create a matte texture. This process produces directional linear or circular patterns, enhancing the metal's inherent aesthetic.
This brushed titanium finish is highly prevalent in consumer electronics, offering both a refined tactile experience and visual appeal. It feels smooth to the touch, with a subtle, controlled friction. It is commonly applied to electronic devices, watches, kitchenware, and hardware.

5. PVD Coating: PVD, or Physical Vapor Deposition, is a type of vacuum coating process that is already highly mature. It can be applied to titanium alloy surfaces, primarily to add functional coatings that provide protection.
It should be noted, however, that currently, PVD coatings are generally only considered acceptable when serving a specific functional purpose; their overall durability still requires improvement-unless both the base material and the PVD coating materials themselves are of exceptionally high performance.

6. CNC Machining: CNC machining of titanium alloys is primarily used for shaping and precision finishing. A major challenge in this process is tool wear. Because titanium alloys are exceptionally hard, they are significantly more difficult to machine than other metals.
During machining, tools are subjected to high temperatures, intense cutting forces, prolonged friction, significant vibration-induced deformation, and material adhesion (built-up edge)-all of which lead to severe tool wear. Conventional cutting tools are generally unsuitable for titanium alloys; instead, specialized tools-such as those with advanced composite coatings, or even diamond or cubic boron nitride (CBN) tools-are required for effective machining. In the case of smartwatch casings, for example, one cutting tool is consumed for every four casings produced, resulting in substantial costs.

7. Grinding and polishing: Grinding and polishing is a necessary step for almost every material processing. The purpose is to make the product present a more precise size and a more delicate texture. It is often necessary to use fine polishing particles or consumables to finely polish every position on the product surface.
At the same time, special effects can also be achieved through specific process solutions, such as high-gloss mirror, matte frosting, etc.
