Hardness analysis of titanium and titanium alloys

Jan 05, 2026

With the maturation of technologies such as powder metallurgy and additive manufacturing, the hardness properties of titanium alloys will achieve further breakthroughs.

The hardness of titanium alloys is significantly affected by alloy composition, heat treatment process, and testing methods. Taking common grades as examples:

• Ti-6Al-4V: Annealed hardness ranges from HRC30-38 to HV286-351. It exhibits excellent balance between strength and toughness and is widely used in aerospace structural components.

• Pure titanium: HV140-226, with lower hardness but outstanding corrosion resistance, commonly used in chemical equipment.

• High-temperature titanium alloys: such as UNS R55400, whose hardness is increased to above HRC40 by adding rare metal elements, meeting the requirements of extreme working conditions in oil and gas extraction. The hardness advantage of titanium alloys is reflected in:

• Wear resistance: Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy achieves friction reduction and wear resistance in mild friction environments (such as aerospace engine blades) through surface oxide film (TiO₂). The wear rate increases with the increase of load and speed, but the surface hardness can be further improved by nitriding treatment;

• Strength-plasticity synergy: The new ultra-high strength titanium alloy achieves breakthroughs in tensile strength ≥1500 MPa, yield strength ≥1400 MPa, and elongation ≥5% through cross-scale microstructure control technology, providing material solutions for 3C consumer electronics (such as hinges for foldable screen phones).

• Aerospace: Titanium Home points out that the high specific strength (strength-to-density ratio) of titanium alloys makes them the preferred material for key components such as aircraft engine blades and landing gear. For example, a certain aircraft model reduced its weight by 5 tons and increased its passenger capacity by over 100 by using Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy.

• Oil and Gas Extraction: For the corrosive environment of high-temperature, high-pressure wells, the United States has developed a new generation of high-strength, corrosion-resistant α+β type titanium alloy, UNS R55400. Its hardness and creep resistance are significantly superior to traditional materials, but its cost is high. Domestic research teams are working to reduce manufacturing costs by optimizing the alloy composition.

• Biomedicine: After surface treatment, the wear resistance of Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy is improved by 30%, effectively reducing the generation of wear particles in artificial joints and extending the lifespan of implants.
