How to cut a thin titanium tube?

Apr 20, 2026

Key principles for cutting thin titanium tubes: low speed, adequate cooling, rigid clamping, prevention of oxidation, deformation, and tool sticking; prioritize cold cutting and avoid hot cutting.

The most commonly used methods for cutting titanium tubes include band saw cutting, lathe cutting, laser tube cutting, wire EDM cutting, and roller tube cutters, among others. Each cutting method has its own advantages and strengths.

1.Tube Cutter / Roller-Type Tube Cutter (Ideal for thin-walled, small-diameter tubes; chip-free; excellent roundness)

Suitable for: Outer diameter 3–8 mm, wall thickness ≤0.5 mm; high precision, no deformation, no burrs

Tool: Specialized micro-tube cutter for metal (with carbide rollers); do not use standard stainless steel cutters (prone to chipping and titanium adhesion)

2.Laser Cutting

Highest precision and excellent cut quality

Requires specialized laser cutting equipment

Suitable for precision machining and complex shapes

3.Wire Cutting (Electrical Discharge Machining)

Suitable for ultra-hard titanium alloys or extremely thin-walled tubes

No mechanical stress; extremely high precision

Relatively slow cutting speed

4.Lathe Turning (Maximum precision: ±0.02 mm, flat end faces)

Applications: Outer diameter ≥ 4 mm; requires perpendicular end faces, burr-free, and distortion-free

5.Miniature Metal Circular Saws / Cold Saws (Batch Production, Accuracy ±0.05 mm)

Applications: Outer diameters 4–12 mm, batch cutting

Tools: Fine-toothed carbide circular saw blades (φ80–125 mm, 60–120 teeth); suitable for both dry and wet cutting, with wet cutting preferred

Key Considerations

**Prevent Work Hardening: Use low speeds, continuous feed, avoid pauses, and do not repeatedly cut the same spot. Titanium is highly susceptible to work hardening; once hardened, it becomes more difficult to cut and is prone to tool chipping.

**Prevent Overheating / Tool Sticking: Titanium has poor thermal conductivity, causing heat to concentrate. Adequate cooling is essential (emulsion / cutting oil / kerosene); dry cutting is strictly prohibited. Keep tools sharp; dull tools will inevitably stick to the material and cause surface roughness at the tube end.

**Prevent Deformation / Flattening: Thin-walled titanium tubes have low rigidity. Use soft jaws, V-blocks, and auxiliary supports for clamping; apply moderate clamping force and position the cutting point close to the fixture. For thin-walled tubes, prioritize roller tube cutters or lathes.

**Prevent Oxidation: If the cut surface appears yellow or blue after cutting, remove the oxide layer by acid pickling (hydrofluoric acid + nitric acid) or sanding to prevent issues with welding or assembly

**Safety: Titanium chips are flammable and dust is toxic; wear safety goggles, a dust mask, and cut-resistant gloves; ensure proper ventilation; promptly remove titanium chips; keep away from open flames
