**Titanium Exhaust pipe and muffler**
Titanium is widely used in automotive exhaust pipes. In the past, exhaust pipes and mufflers were mostly made of ordinary steel, aluminum alloys, and fiber-reinforced plastics (FRP). For exhaust temperatures above 400°C, titanium offers much higher heat resistance than aluminum alloys and even greater strength than steel.
Exhaust pipes and mufflers undergo various forming processes, including bending and cold pressing, requiring the material to have excellent cold forming properties. Furthermore, as the muffler is an exterior component, titanium alloy offers a more modern and stylish design.
Exhaust valves must not only be heat-resistant and wear-resistant but also be lead- and cobalt-free. American automakers often use titanium alloys for both intake and exhaust valves, with Grade 5 used for intake valves and Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo alloy for exhaust valves. Japanese automakers typically use Grafr 5 alloy for valve seats in racing cars, though some also use Ti-5Al-2Cr-1Fe alloy. Exhaust pipes made of titanium alloy for tailpipes and return pipe components are impervious to corrosion from chloride salts and sulfur-containing exhaust gases, even the welds. They are also 8.2kg lighter than traditional stainless steel exhaust systems, improving fuel efficiency, accelerating acceleration, and shortening braking distances.
Titanium alloy mufflers weigh only 5kg to 6kg, much lighter than stainless steel ones. Japanese car mufflers are almost entirely titanium alloyed. The titanium muffler and exhaust system on General Motors (GM) Chevrolet vehicles weighs only 11.8kg, 41% lighter than the 20kg stainless steel version, while also being slightly stronger. The Ti-33.5Al-1Nb-0.5Cr-0.5Si alloy developed by Daido Steel in Japan is an excellent material for manufacturing engine exhaust valves, offering excellent oxidation and creep resistance. Compared to traditional martensitic heat-resistant steels and nickel alloys used in exhaust valves, titanium alloys offer advantages: low density, excellent heat resistance, higher strength above 540°C, higher creep resistance than nickel alloys, and excellent wear resistance.
**Titanium alloy Springs**
Based on a comprehensive consideration of strength, density, and elastic modulus, titanium alloy is an excellent material for springs. TC4 alloy was first used in the Porsche 917 race car springs nearly 20 years ago. Ford Motor Company replaced its previous steel coil suspension springs with springs made from RMI's βc alloy on its race cars, resulting in a 53% reduction in weight. However, high production costs limited its widespread adoption. Subsequently, Timet developed a new Fe- and Mo-based Ti-4.5Fe-6.8Mo-1.5Al alloy, called Low Cost Beta (LCB), which retains the advantages of βc alloy while offering a reasonable price. This alloy can be used in springs using existing steel spring production equipment. With the support of Volkswagen, the resulting springs are one-third lighter than steel and 50% more expensive than the original β-titanium alloy. Even more remarkable, titanium alloy springs are 50% to 80% shorter than steel springs, resulting in greater passenger and cargo space. Titanium alloy springs also have a more prominent advantage - high corrosion resistance. In the standard salt spray corrosion fatigue test, the fatigue life of steel springs is reduced by 50% compared with that in air, while the fatigue life of titanium alloy springs is only reduced by 4%. In addition, titanium alloy springs do not require protective surface treatment.
**Titanium Fasteners and Brakes**
Titanium alloys are widely used in aerospace fasteners due to their high corrosion resistance, light weight, and low thermal expansion coefficient. If production costs were to decrease significantly, they would also become a common fastener in passenger cars. Titanium's low thermal conductivity and wear resistance preclude its use in brake impellers. However, due to its excellent corrosion resistance, it has been used in the manufacture of sealing rings for brake system flange connections and brake pad guide pins. Its low thermal conductivity also provides some protection for brake fluid.
