What is Bending titanium sheet metal?
Bending titanium sheet metal involves applying external force to pure titanium (Gr1/Gr2) and titanium alloy (Gr5/BT9, etc.) sheets using equipment such as bending machines and dies to induce plastic bending deformation, thereby forming titanium components with specific angles (commonly 90°, 135°, U-shaped, V-shaped), curved or irregularly shaped titanium components. The core of this process lies in utilizing titanium's plasticity to achieve cold or hot forming while preserving the material's inherent superior properties.
This is a manufacturing process in which titanium alloy sheets are subjected to external forces to induce plastic deformation, thereby forming specific angles or curvatures. Due to the unique physical and mechanical properties of titanium alloys, the bending process differs significantly from that of conventional metals such as steel and aluminum.
Common Titanium Plate Grades
| Material | Type |
Bending performance |
Applicable Scenarios |
Key Features |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Grade 1(CP Titanium) | Pure Titanium |
Excellent (best ductility) |
Thin-walled, small-radius, complex bends, corrosion-resistant parts |
Low tensile strength, elongation ≥25%, easy to bend when cold, minimal springback |
| Grade 2(CP Titanium) | Pure Titanium |
Excellent |
General bending, structural components |
Moderate strength, elongation ≥20%, suitable for cold bending, controllable springback |
| Grade 5(Ti-6Al-4V) | α+β alloy |
Normal(requires process control) |
High-strength structural bent parts |
High strength, 10%–15% elongation, prone to cracking during cold bending, often requires hot bending or annealing |
| Ti-2Al-1.5Mn/Ti-4Al-1.5Mn | α+β alloy | Good |
Moderate intensity, complex bends |
Better formability than Gr5, suitable for cold bending, and moderate springback |
Key Physical Properties of Bending titanium sheet metal
High springback (the most critical challenge): Titanium's elastic modulus (approximately 110 GPa) is only half that of steel and two-thirds that of aluminum. After unloading, the springback angle is large (typically 5°–15°), necessitating springback compensation (over-bending).
Significant work hardening: During cold bending of pure titanium or titanium alloys, grain refinement occurs in the deformation zone, leading to a sudden increase in strength and a decrease in ductility. Repeated bending can easily cause cracking, so deformation must be controlled and intermediate annealing performed.
High coefficient of friction and susceptibility to scratching: Titanium adheres strongly to mold surfaces, making it prone to indentations and scratches during bending. Lubrication, mold polishing, and the use of protective film are required.
High temperature sensitivity: Cold bending (at room temperature) is suitable for pure titanium; alloys such as Gr5 have a small cold bending limit (R ≥ 3t). Plasticity improves at temperatures ≥ 200°C; hot bending (300–600°C) can reduce cracking and lower the minimum bending radius
Applications of Bendng Titanium Sheets
Due to titanium's low density (4.51 g/cm³, 60% that of steel), high specific strength, corrosion resistance (seawater, acids, alkalis, salt spray), non-magnetic properties, and biocompatibility-combined with its ability to be bent and formed-it is widely used in:
- Chemical corrosion protection: titanium heat exchanger baffles, reactor linings, pipe elbows, and corrosion-resistant tanks (Gr1/Gr2)
- Aerospace: Bent aircraft skin panels, engine mounts, and airframe structural components (Gr5)
- Medical: Bent orthopedic implants, surgical instruments, and medical device housings (pure titanium / Gr5)
- Marine Engineering: Ship titanium components, desalination equipment, and housings for underwater instruments
- Electronics / Precision: Mobile phone frames, battery casings, and precision instrument bent parts (thin-walled pure titanium)
- Others: Titanium kitchenware, bicycle frames, and decorative titanium bent parts
