Golf is a sophisticated sport that is often perceived as "high-end, elegant, and prestigious," and is deeply loved by high-society individuals both at home and abroad. People have high expectations for golf equipment-not only must it look attractive, but the clubs must also be lightweight and enable fast, accurate shots-which has driven the continuous development of the golf club manufacturing industry.
Early golf clubs were mostly made of persimmon wood but were gradually replaced by stainless steel. In the early 1990s, Japanese manufacturers began introducing titanium golf clubs. Clubs made of titanium alloy offer excellent stability and elasticity, which golfers welcomed as a treasure, thereby greatly driving the development of titanium golf clubs.
The game of golf is greatly influenced by the materials used in equipment, which necessitates the use of different clubs in various locations and under different conditions on the course. Clubs are designed in a variety of shapes and lengths and can generally be divided into three major categories: woods, irons, and putters.
1. Titanium Alloy Wood Clubheads
Woods are used for tee shots and long-distance shots. To hit the ball straighter and farther, the weight of the wood clubhead must be maintained at 200g, while its volume should be maximized to increase the contact area between the ball and the clubhead.
Titanium alloy has low density, high strength, and good corrosion resistance. For the same weight, a hollow titanium alloy clubhead is 2–3 times larger in volume than a stainless steel clubhead, and its mass is evenly distributed around the clubhead, enabling players to hit the ball farther and straighter.
2. Titanium Alloy Iron Heads
Iron clubheads are primarily used for mid-range and precision shots, which demand a higher degree of accuracy. When the ball contacts the clubface, the clubface must provide sufficient friction to increase the backspin rate after the ball is struck. This allows for better control of the ball's roll upon impact, resulting in more accurate shots.
Some companies incorporate a titanium-diamond composite into the clubface to increase the coefficient of friction through diamond particles on and near the surface. However, this adds nearly 30 g to the clubhead's weight; otherwise, the clubhead would become too small, making it difficult to strike the ball. By using a titanium alloy as the main body of the iron clubhead, the titanium-diamond composite can be embedded into a clubface of the same volume without increasing the mass.
3. Titanium Alloy Putter Heads
Putters are used to putt the ball into the hole on the green. A company has launched a series of titanium-tungsten putters, in which the central body of the putter head is made of titanium alloy, with tungsten used for counterweights at both ends. The tungsten blocks are wedged into the body and then densely bonded through methods such as high-pressure sintering or hot pressing.
The density of titanium alloy is generally 4.51 g/cm³, while that of the tungsten counterweights is approximately 19 g/cm³, resulting in 70% of the putter head's mass being concentrated at both ends. This design increases the moment of inertia of the putter head's striking surface by about 50%. A higher moment of inertia allows the putter head to prevent twisting caused by a strike that misses the center of the ball. This putter offers more pronounced advantages on the green compared to traditional putters.
Market Outlook
With China's rapid economic growth and the rapid improvement in people's living standards, golf has gained popularity among a wide range of sports enthusiasts. For middle- and upper-class consumers in particular, playing golf is not only a way to stay fit but also a form of business networking. China is poised to become another consumer market with enormous potential, alongside the United States and Japan.
Titanium alloys have been used in the golf equipment industry for more than two decades, and various titanium materials are now widely utilized in golf clubheads. However, titanium alloy clubheads are relatively expensive-costing nearly three times as much as stainless steel clubheads-so the clubhead market remains dominated by stainless steel. Improving titanium alloy casting technology and reducing costs will become the primary areas of research for golf clubhead manufacturers in the future.
