What are the main applications of nickel rods?

As an important industrial metal, nickel rod plays an irreplaceable role in many key fields thanks to its excellent corrosion resistance, high-temperature strength, and unique electromagnetic properties.

I. Chemical Industry

Nickel rods play a central role in the manufacture of chemical equipment and are particularly suitable for highly corrosive environments.

Alkali production equipment: Pure nickel rods can reliably withstand strong alkali corrosion and are used to manufacture pipes, valves, and reaction vessels.

Corrosion-resistant components: In facilities such as sulfuric acid towers and ammonia towers, nickel-based alloys can extend equipment lifespan by more than 30%.

II. Aerospace and Energy Sectors

High-Temperature Components: Nickel-based high-temperature alloys are used to manufacture turbine blades, rocket engine nozzles, and other components capable of sustained operation at temperatures exceeding 500°C.

Nuclear Industry: Nickel alloy bars are used in critical components of nuclear reactors, offering both radiation resistance and corrosion resistance.

III. Electronics and Battery Technology

New Energy Batteries: High-nickel cathode materials enhance the energy density of lithium-ion batteries; automakers such as Tesla view this as a key technological breakthrough.

IV. Machinery Manufacturing and Special Equipment

Wear-Resistant Parts: Mechanical components such as bearings and gears utilize the wear resistance of nickel rods.

Medical and Healthcare Equipment: The biocompatibility of nickel alloys makes them suitable for surgical instruments and implants.

V. Other Emerging Fields

Hydrogen Fuel Cells: Nickel serves as a catalyst support, contributing to the development of clean energy.

Deep-Sea Engineering: Nickel-based alloys are used in pressure-resistant hulls and anti-corrosion coatings.

Analysis of Key Characteristics

Excellent corrosion resistance, particularly against alkalis: This is the most prominent advantage of pure nickel. It exhibits exceptional resistance to caustic alkalis (such as sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide), even at high temperatures, high concentrations, or in molten states, making it an ideal material for handling hot, concentrated alkaline solutions. It is also resistant to corrosion by dry halogen gases, neutral salt solutions, and most organic acids. It should be noted, however, that it exhibits poor corrosion resistance in strong oxidizing acids (such as nitric acid) and in moist halogen environments.

Outstanding Physical and Mechanical Properties:

Physical Properties: Pure nickel has a density of approximately 8.89 g/cm³ and a melting point of approximately 1435–1446°C. It is ferromagnetic (with a Curie temperature of approximately 360°C) and exhibits good electrical and thermal conductivity.

Mechanical Properties: In the annealed state, the tensile strength of pure nickel rod typically ranges from 345 to 550 MPa, with an elongation of 35–55%, demonstrating excellent plasticity and toughness, which facilitates subsequent processing.

Excellent Machining and Welding Properties: Pure nickel possesses high plasticity and ductility, making it highly suitable for cold and hot working processes such as forging, rolling, drawing, and deep drawing. Additionally, it can be welded using various methods, including TIG welding and resistance welding, and exhibits good weldability. However, machining is relatively difficult due to its tendency to "stick to the tool" and undergo work hardening, requiring the use of specific cutting tools and cooling methods.
