The Ti80 titanium alloy bars is a near-α titanium alloy. Its chemical composition is based on a titanium matrix, with the main alloying elements including aluminum (Al), niobium (Nb), zirconium (Zr), and molybdenum (Mo). The specific composition ranges are as follows (by mass): Al 15.5%–6.5%, Nb 2.5%–3.5%, Zr 1.5%–2.5%, Mo 0.6%–1.5%. It also contains small amounts of impurity elements (Fe 0.25%, Si 0.15%, Cs 0.10%, Ns 0.05%, Hs 0.015%, Os 0.15%). Among these, Al is a stabilizing element that enhances the alloy's strength through solid solution strengthening; Zr is a neutral element that helps improve the alloy's ductility; Nb and Mo are stabilizing elements that refine the microstructure and enhance the alloy's
high-temperature stability.
As a near-α titanium alloy, Ti80-with a nominal composition of Ti-6Al-3Nb-2Zr-1Mo-is finding increasingly widespread application in marine engineering fields such as shipbuilding, the petroleum industry, and deep-sea submersibles, thanks to its low density, high specific strength, excellent resistance to seawater corrosion, and good weldability. Compared to traditional titanium alloys, it offers superior overall performance and demonstrates irreplaceable advantages, particularly in critical structural components such as high-pressure vessels and pressure-resistant housings.
Nominal components & Material Properties
Ti80 (Ti-6Al-3Nb-2Zr-1Mo) is a near-α titanium alloy with the following base composition:
Al 5.5%–6.5% (solid solution strengthening)
Nb 2.5%–3.3%, Mo 1.0%–1.2% (β-stabilizing elements, enhancing high-temperature stability)
Zr 1.8%–2.2% (grain refinement)
Impurity limits: O ≤ 0.069%, C/N ≤ 0.01%, H ≤ 0.008% (high purity requirements).

Density: 4.5 g/cm³ (40% lighter than steel)
Coefficient of thermal expansion: 8.9×10⁻⁶/°C (20–400°C)
Non-magnetic, suitable for naval stealth design.

Room-Temperature Strength: Tensile strength ≥900 MPa, yield strength ≥825 MPa-the foundation for weight reduction in load-bearing structural components
Impact Toughness: ≥50 J/cm² (standard); ≥75 J/cm² (optimized process)-resistance to wave impact and collision loads
High-Temperature Performance: Strength retention rate ≥85% at 500°C-suitability for engine components
Corrosion Resistance: Annual corrosion rate in seawater <0.001 mm/a; pitting resistance potential >1.2 V; 20-year service life guarantee for deep-sea equipment
Weldability: Post-weld heat treatment coefficient ≥0.9; Feasibility of segmented manufacturing for large structures
Welding Characteristics
Welding of Ti80 alloy has the following characteristics:
1. Susceptibility to contamination-induced embrittlement: The high-temperature zone (>300°C) is prone to contamination by air (O, N, H), water, and other substances, leading to embrittlement of the joint;
2. Overheating-induced phase transformation: The phase transformation temperature is approximately 1010°C to 1020°C; the welding heat cycle can easily cause coarse phases or acicular structures to form in the weld and heat-affected zone, reducing ductility;
3. Sensitivity to metallic contamination: Metallic impurities such as iron and copper readily form brittle phases, leading to cracks;
4. Porosity tendency: Porosity is likely to occur if pre-weld cleaning is inadequate or shielding is insufficient.
