Grade 9 Titanium alloy forged round rings are α+β-type titanium alloy ring-shaped forgings composed primarily of Ti-3Al-2.5V (titanium-aluminum-vanadium). Due to their excellent cold formability, weldability, and corrosion resistance, they are widely used in fields such as aerospace and marine engineering. It offers an excellent balance between strength, formability, and corrosion resistance, making it a key structural component in aerospace, marine engineering, and high-end equipment manufacturing.

Gr9 titanium alloy forged rings combine light weight, high strength, corrosion resistance, weldability, and good formability, making them particularly suitable for manufacturing precision ring-shaped components that require a balance between weight reduction and corrosion resistance. Through scientific forging and heat treatment processes, a uniform, refined microstructure and circumferentially distributed fiber flow lines can be achieved, enabling these rings to play an irreplaceable role in aerospace hydraulic piping, marine equipment, and high-end chemical processing equipment. Manufacturing Process

 

Gr9 titanium alloy forged rings typically follow the following process route:

Melting: Vacuum arc remelting (VAR) or cold hearth furnace melting to ensure low levels of interstitial elements

Forging/Ring Rolling: Shaped via open-die forging, die forging, or radial-axial ring rolling mills to achieve a dense microstructure and annular profile

Heat Treatment: Primarily annealing (649–760°C × 1–3 h, air cooling) to relieve processing stresses and stabilize the microstructure

Machining: Precision turning of the inner bore, outer diameter, and end faces to meet the dimensional requirements specified in the drawings

Non-Destructive Testing: Ultrasonic testing (UT), penetrant testing (PT), etc., to ensure internal quality

Key Advantages

 

  1. Excellent cold formability: Compared to TC4, Gr9 is easier to cold-bend, flare, and flange, making it suitable for manufacturing thin-walled ring components with complex cross-sections
  2. Good weldability: Can be welded using inert gas shielded welding methods such as TIG and MIG; weld properties are close to those of the base material
  3. High specific strength: With a density of only 4.48 g/cm³, it achieves strength levels comparable to medium- to high-strength steels, resulting in significant weight reduction.
  4. Exceptional corrosion resistance: Exhibits excellent resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and erosion in seawater, chloride environments, and various acidic and alkaline media.
  5. Non-magnetic: Suitable for applications sensitive to magnetic interference.

  2. Bicycles / Sports Equipment: High-end bicycle frame bottom brackets, hubs, and stem connecting rings (Gr9 is well-suited for cold forming and is the mainstream material for titanium bicycle tubing);
  3. Chemical and Marine: Pressure vessel flanges, heat exchanger tube sheet rings, and seawater system valve seats-resistant to chloride ion corrosion;
  4. Medical: Orthopedic external fixation rings, prosthetic connectors (good biocompatibility, but not for primary load-bearing implants; Gr5 ELI is commonly used for implants);
  5. Automotive and Racing: Exhaust flanges, turbocharger rings, suspension connectors-lightweight and heat-resistant.
