What is titanium alloy anodizing?
Titanium alloy anodizing is a surface treatment technique that uses an external electric field in a specific electrolyte environment to cause the titanium alloy to undergo an oxidation reaction as the anode. Taking sulfuric acid electrolyte as an example, the voltage is usually controlled at 10-20V, which can create an oxide film with certain protective properties on the surface of the titanium alloy.
From an electrochemical perspective, during the anodizing process of titanium alloys, titanium atoms on the alloy surface lose electrons to become titanium ions, which combine with oxygen ions in the electrolyte to form a titanium oxide film. For example, in an oxalic acid electrolyte system, the oxide film has a dense structure and a hardness that reaches a certain value, enhancing the wear resistance of the titanium alloy. The composition and structure of the oxide film formed by the anodizing of titanium alloys vary depending on the electrolyte composition and process parameters. In phosphoric acid electrolytes, the oxide film contains phosphorus, which affects the chemical stability of the film. Related studies have shown that this type of film exhibits unique corrosion resistance under specific corrosive environments.
By adjusting the electrolyte composition and process parameters in the anodizing of titanium alloys, the color of the oxide film can be controlled. For example, in a specific mixed electrolyte, changing parameters such as voltage and time can produce different colors on the surface of the titanium alloy, such as gold, blue, and black, to meet different decorative and functional requirements.
The principle of color change in Titanium anodizing
The core of titanium alloy anodizing lies in generating a controllable thickness oxide film on the metal surface, primarily composed of TiO₂. This is fundamentally different from processes like painting and electroplating, which involve attaching an external coating to the metal surface, while anodizing modifies the metal's own surface. The color originates from the "light interference effect" of the oxide film. TiO₂ films of different thicknesses reflect and refract visible light to varying degrees, producing various colors. For example, when the film thickness is 50-80 nm, the titanium alloy appears blue; when the thickness is 100-120 nm, it appears golden. This oxide film achieves atomic-level bonding with the titanium alloy substrate. Because the oxide film is directly formed by the oxidation of the base metal, there is no obvious interface between the two; it is not a simple adhesion relationship. Therefore, the problem of "coating peeling and discoloration" is fundamentally avoided, which is the core advantage of anodizing over processes like painting and electroplating.
