Applications of Titanium Alloys in the Chlor-Alkali Industry

Thanks to its excellent corrosion resistance against chloride ions, titanium is widely used in the chlor-alkali industry. The main types of titanium equipment include the following:

I. Electrolyzer Systems

Titanium is widely used in the manufacture of electrodes and tank components for both metal-anode electrolyzers and ion-membrane electrolyzers. Titanium anodes offer dimensional stability and controllable anode spacing, which helps reduce cell voltage and save energy. Titanium-based ion-membrane electrolyzers feature a long service life, reliable operation, and high current efficiency. Since the 1970s, China has progressively replaced traditional graphite electrolysers with metal-anode and ion-membrane electrolysers, significantly improving production capacity and product quality.

II. Wet Chlorine Gas Cooling System

Wet chlorine gas produced by electrolysis is high in temperature and extremely corrosive. Titanium shell-and-tube wet chlorine coolers use seawater or recirculating water as the cooling medium to rapidly cool and dry the wet chlorine gas, effectively preventing corrosion of equipment and environmental pollution caused by chlorine gas. Replacing graphite coolers with titanium coolers reduces equipment size, improves heat transfer efficiency, and significantly lowers maintenance costs.

III. Brine Preheating and Dechlorination System

The refined brine preheater utilizes titanium tube heat exchangers, which can withstand corrosion from high-temperature chloride media and ensure stable operation during the preheating process. The dechlorination tower, as well as the pumps and valves used in vacuum dechlorination, are manufactured from titanium. This effectively resists corrosion from residual free chlorine during the dechlorination process, extends equipment maintenance intervals, and ensures the effectiveness of dechlorination and the quality of reused brine.

IV. Chlorine Scrubbing and Transportation System

The adoption of titanium for the chlorine cooling scrubber tower, as well as various pumps, valves, and pipelines in chlor-alkali production, has resolved the issues of insufficient strength, susceptibility to aging, and leakage associated with non-metallic materials, thereby improving the system's and safety. Application Results: The widespread adoption of titanium equipment has resolved long-standing issues associated with equipment made from non-metallic materials such as graphite and polyvinyl chloride (PVC)-including bulkiness, high energy consumption, short service life, and environmental pollution-providing reliable equipment support for energy conservation, reduced consumption, and clean production in the chlor-alkali industry. Currently, China's chlor-alkali industry ranks among the top in the chemical sector in terms of titanium consumption, and titanium has become an indispensable key corrosion-resistant material in this field.
