Grade 5 titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V) is widely used in a wide range of high-end fields, including aerospace and medical applications, due to its high strength, lightweight design, and excellent corrosion resistance. However, its unique material properties present numerous technical challenges during the bending process. To ensure high-quality Gr5 titanium alloy bent parts, the following key considerations must be strictly adhered to. These key points have attracted the attention of Titanium Home and have been reported in detail.
Preheating and Temperature Control:
Precise Control to Avoid Hidden Dangers. Gr5 titanium alloy has low plasticity at room temperature and is prone to cracking if bent at low temperatures. Therefore, the workpiece must be preheated before bending, and the preheating temperature must be controlled between 200 and 400°C. At the same time, special care must be taken to avoid localized overheating. When the temperature exceeds 500°C, the grain size of Gr5 titanium alloy becomes coarse, significantly reducing its mechanical properties.
To ensure uniform heating and maintain real-time visibility of the workpiece's temperature, the workpiece temperature should be closely monitored using an infrared thermometer. Only by ensuring precise temperature control can a good foundation be laid for subsequent bending operations.
Bending rate and pressure control: slow speed and slow pressure for precise compensation.
Gr5 titanium alloy has the characteristic of "strain aging," which means that stress concentration is prone to occur during rapid bending. To avoid this, low-speed bending should be adopted, and the bending rate should generally be controlled at ≤5mm/s. When determining the bending pressure, it is necessary to find the optimal pressure value through trial bending. If the pressure is too low, the workpiece is prone to springback after bending.
Moreover, the springback rate of Gr5 titanium alloy is much higher than that of ordinary steel, so a 10%-15% compensation amount needs to be reserved during the processing process. Conversely, if the pressure is too high, it may cause defects such as wrinkling or cracking at the bend, seriously affecting the quality of the bent part.
Mold and lubrication selection: high-quality adaptation and friction reduction. The selection of molds is crucial to the processing accuracy of Gr5 titanium alloy bending parts. Due to the high hardness of Gr5 titanium alloy, in order to prevent mold wear and deviation in bending accuracy, molds made of high-strength materials, such as H13 hot work die steel, should be selected. Molds made of this material have good wear resistance and thermal stability and can meet the requirements of Gr5 titanium alloy bending processing. Before bending, a special titanium alloy lubricant, such as a molybdenum-based high-temperature lubricant, must be applied to the contact area between the workpiece and the mold. Applying lubricant can effectively reduce frictional resistance, prevent scratches on the workpiece surface, and avoid adhesion between the mold and the workpiece, ensuring a smooth bending process.
