In the field of general machinery industry, food machinery accounts for a large proportion, about 18%. Because it is closely related to human health, there are some special requirements for its material properties.
First, the quality of processed food must fully comply with relevant domestic and international standards. No corrosion or other metal ion release is permitted. Otherwise, not only will the food taste spoiled and have an unpleasant odor, affecting appetite, but consumption can also lead to allergic reactions and even serious illnesses. Titanium is highly corrosion-resistant and biocompatible, making it a reliable and safe metal material for food processing, eliminating the risk of microbial corrosion. Secondly, if wear and tear on machinery produces particles or powder, ingestion is harmless. Even if it turns into oxides such as TiO2, it is not only harmless but also beneficial, as titanium oxide is a beneficial food additive.
Titanium has excellent corrosion resistance against high-salt and strongly acidic substances, making it suitable for manufacturing equipment that comes into contact with such solutions, such as tanks, piping, agitator propellers, valves, and hoppers. Even equipment used in brewing oil can be made of titanium. Heating and cooling are required during the beer and juice production processes, and these equipment can be manufactured from titanium sheet metal. In the salt production process, solutions have high salt content and flow at a constant rate, so even pure titanium equipment can corrode in gaps. Therefore, alloys such as Ti-0.15Pd, which are resistant to crevice corrosion, are required.
Titanium is the leading material for brewing equipment. Among alcoholic beverages, brewing vats are typically made of titanium. Daiginshu Co., Ltd. in Japan initially used wooden vats for brewing. Iron vats were not used because the presence of iron ions not only compromised the flavor but also tinted the wine yellow. To achieve a superior flavor, the barrels were enclosed in cooling cans. The initial iron ion concentration was 0.063 × 10⁻⁶ at 30°C. For comparison, 304 stainless steel vats were also used. After a six-month trial, results showed that the iron ion concentration of the wine in the pure titanium cans remained unchanged, while the iron ion concentration in the stainless steel barrels reached 0.355 × 10⁻⁶, over 5.6 times the original concentration. Wine brewed in pure titanium containers takes less time to reach perfection than wine brewed in other containers. The Soviet Union and Russia also use titanium tanks to brew wine.
