In deep-sea applications, titanium tubes are mainly used as pressure-resistant structural components and fluid transmission pipes. Their core advantages lie in corrosion resistance, high strength and lightweight characteristics.
1) Deep-sea pressure-resistant structure
Titanium alloy tubes are often used to manufacture pressure-resistant shells, heat exchangers and pipe fittings for deep-sea equipment. For instance, the manned sphere of China's "Striver" manned submersible is made of titanium alloy, which can withstand the extreme pressure in the Mariana Trench (about 110 MPa). Titanium tubes, with their high strength (yield strength exceeding 800 MPa) and low density (4.5 g/cm³), remain stable in deep-sea high-pressure environments while reducing the overall weight of equipment.
2) Fluid transmission system
In deep-sea communication equipment, titanium alloy thin-walled tubes (with a thickness of 1 to 3mm) are used as transducer housings, taking into account both pressure resistance and lightweight. For instance, the transducer housing of underwater acoustic communication equipment is encapsulated in titanium alloy. Its acoustic performance (low elastic modulus and high sound velocity) can reduce the loss of sound wave reflection and enhance communication efficiency.
3) Marine engineering equipment
Titanium alloy pipelines are often used in pumps, valves, pipes and other accessories of deep-sea research vessels, submarines and offshore platforms. For instance, a Japanese company has fabricated nearly 500-meter-long vertical shaft pipes using seamless titanium alloy tubes for offshore drilling platforms. The fracture toughness and fatigue life of these pipes are significantly superior to those of traditional materials.
4) Deep-sea corrosion resistance
The dense oxide film (TiO₂) formed on the surface of titanium alloys can resist corrosive media such as seawater and sulfides. In deep-sea high-salinity and high-pressure environments, its service life can reach over 30 years, which is far superior to that of stainless steel and aluminum alloys. This characteristic makes it the preferred material for long-term deep-sea deployment equipment
