Corrosion Performance Of Titanium in River And Sea Water

Titanium exhibits excellent corrosion resistance in both river and seawater, with its resistance in seawater being particularly valuable. It is no exaggeration to say that titanium is the most corrosion-resistant metal material in all natural waters. Titanium may discolor or lose its luster in high-temperature water and steam (e.g., >300℃), and may even gain a slight weight, but this will not cause corrosion.

Titanium is highly corrosion-resistant in seawater at temperatures as high as 260°C. Titanium tube condensers have been used in polluted seawater for over 20 years with only slight discoloration and no signs of corrosion. Because titanium is neither corrosive nor toxic in seawater, marine organism attachment is a significant practical problem. Industrially pure titanium exhibits ideal resistance to crevice corrosion, pitting corrosion, and impact corrosion in seawater, and its susceptibility to stress corrosion and corrosion fatigue is not severe. In high-velocity flowing seawater (e.g., 36.6 m/s), the erosion resistance increases somewhat. The presence of abrasive particles such as sand in seawater has some impact on titanium's erosion resistance, but not as severely as on copper and aluminum alloys. In seawater, titanium is also the most ideal material for resisting cavitation corrosion.

1. Marine environment:

Extremely strong corrosion resistance: Titanium's resistance to seawater corrosion is 100 times that of stainless steel, with virtually no pitting, crevice corrosion, or uniform corrosion. Its surface oxide film is self-healing and can regenerate quickly even if damaged.

High-temperature adaptability: Remains stable in seawater below 260℃, but strong acidic environments with pH=1 or high temperatures (>300℃) may affect performance.

Applications: Widely used in seawater desalination equipment, offshore platform structural components, etc.

2. River water environment

High stability: Titanium exhibits excellent corrosion resistance in freshwater (such as river water), and its oxide film effectively resists corrosion from weakly acidic or alkaline media.

Comparative advantages: Compared to seawater, river water is less corrosive, making titanium more reliable for long-term use.

Corrosion Resistance Principle: The naturally formed dense oxide film (TiO₂) on the titanium surface is key to corrosion resistance. Its P/B ratio (1~2.5) ensures complete coverage of the substrate and is self-healing.
