I. Key Production Process of Titanium Ingots

1. Pretreatment of Titanium Sponge The titanium sponge is crushed, screened, and dried to remove surface oxides and volatile substances, with oxygen content controlled to ≤500 ppm. Alloy powders such as aluminum, vanadium, nickel, and molybdenum are added according to the required alloy composition and mixed thoroughly.

2. Electrode Preparation The mixed material is pressed into cylindrical electrode blanks using a hydraulic press, with a density of ≥3.5 g/cm³. The electrode blanks are welded to form consumable electrodes, with a length suitable for vacuum arc furnace melting. The welding process must be carried out under an inert gas atmosphere.

3. Vacuum Melting Primary Melting: Vacuum arc furnace melting, with a current of 30–50 kA and a vacuum level ≤0.1 Pa, to form the initial ingot. Secondary Melting: The initial ingot is remelted to eliminate compositional segregation and porosity, increasing the ingot density to ≥99.8%. Shrinkage Void Treatment: The current is gradually reduced at the end of the melting process to minimize shrinkage voids at the top of the ingot, with a top-cut rate controlled to ≤8%.

4. Post-Processing and Inspection Surface oxide layers are removed by peeling or machining (turning or grinding). Ultrasonic testing is used to detect internal cracks and inclusions, with allowable defect size ≤Φ2 mm equivalent. Samples are taken for chemical composition and mechanical property testing.

 

II. Quality Inspection Standards

Purity requirements: Oxygen content ≤ 0.15%, Nitrogen content ≤ 0.05%;

Mechanical properties: Tensile strength of Gr5 titanium ingot ≥ 895 MPa, Elongation ≥ 10%;

Internal defects: No cracks detected by X-ray inspection; Inclusion size ≤ Φ1.5 mm.

 

III. Industry Applications and Trends

Aerospace: Titanium ingots are used in high-temperature components such as engine rotors and compressor disks, and must meet the AMS 4928 standard;

Process Upgrades: The introduction of plasma arc melting technology improves alloy homogeneity and melting efficiency.
