Products Description
Grade 5 Titanium alloy Slotted set screws with flat point-commonly referred to as "slotted flat-point set screws" made of titanium alloy-correspond to standards such as ISO 4766, and DIN 551 (specifically the slotted/flat-point configuration). When manufactured from Gr5(Ti-6Al-4V) alloy, they are typically classified as high-end positioning components or set screws used in aerospace, medical, and marine engineering applications. Fundamentally, they are not structural bolts designed to bear shear or tensile loads; rather, they are fasteners that secure a component by pressing the screw's tip against a shaft, bore, keyway, or machined surface, thereby ensuring axial positioning and preventing relative rotation or axial shifting.
Structural characteristics
| Structural component | Feature Description |
|---|---|
| Head | Headless design; the entire shank has a uniform diameter and is threaded, allowing it to be fully countersunk into the threaded hole so that it sits flush with or slightly below the workpiece surface. |
| Drive slot | One end features a flat-head slot (slotted) and is designed to be turned with a flat-head screwdriver. |
| Terminal end | Flat point: features a flat end face, resulting in a large contact area. |
| Threading | Fully threaded, thread length = nominal length; fine or coarse pitch per standard. |
| End chamfer | For short-specification screws, the tip features a 120° chamfer; the 45° chamfer applies only to the area within the thread minor diameter. |

Core advantages of titanium alloys
1. Lightweight: Density of approx. 4.5 g/cm³-about 40% lighter than ordinary steel-making it the top choice for lightweight designs.
2. High strength-to-weight ratio: TC4 offers strength comparable to high-strength steel but at half the weight.
3. Excellent corrosion resistance: Features a self-passivating surface oxide layer; resistant to seawater, salt spray, acids, and alkalis; does not rust over long periods.
4. Non-magnetic: Does not interfere with precision instruments, electronic equipment, or magnetic sensors.
5. Biocompatibility: Non-toxic and non-allergenic; suitable for medical implants and food-processing equipment.
6. Wide temperature range: Operates stably between -200°C and 500°C.
7. Fatigue resistance: Fatigue performance surpasses that of most stainless steels, making it suitable for high-vibration applications.
Application Scenarios
1. Aviation and Lightweight Structures
Small access covers, brackets, sensor mounts, pipe clamps, and fine-adjustment stops for antennas/antenna mounts.
UAVs, aircraft models, and satellite structures: Lightweight and corrosion-resistant; used to secure shafts, sleeves, sliders, or pins. Avoids the rust issues associated with ordinary carbon steel in vacuum environments and is lighter than stainless steel.
2. Medical Devices
Surgical instruments, clamping and positioning components, locking set screws for orthopedic/dental equipment, and locking mechanisms for optical/adjustment systems.
Key requirements include biocompatibility, absence of plating, and low outgassing/leaching; Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) / ISO 5832-3 materials are common. Attention must be paid to cleanliness, lubricant compatibility, and sterilization method validation.
3. Marine and Shipbuilding
Instrumentation, valve position indicators, and propulsion/pump shaft accessories in seawater environments; used for fastening and anti-rotation. Advantages include resistance to chloride ion corrosion (less prone to pitting than stainless steel); however, galvanic corrosion between dissimilar metals must be prevented-insulate contact surfaces or select compatible material pairings.
4. Chemical Processing, Semiconductors, and Cleanroom Equipment
Positioning set screws resistant to oxidizing media, chloride ions, and various acidic/alkaline conditions; semiconductor and vacuum equipment applications prioritize low outgassing, low particle generation, and corrosion resistance.
Not suitable for strong reducing acids such as hydrofluoric acid, hot concentrated hydrochloric acid, or fuming nitric acid; material selection and sealing methods require re-evaluation for strongly reducing environments.
5. Precision Instruments, Optics, and Measuring Equipment
Lens mounts, sensor brackets, fine-adjustment stages, locking mechanisms for micrometers/measuring probes, magnetic shielding components, and lightweight measuring arms.
Flat-point screws pressing against machined surfaces minimize indentation and keep positioning surfaces clean; slotted heads are suitable for applications requiring simple maintenance tools and low torque. Hex-socket heads or precision locking mechanisms are generally preferred when high repeatability in positioning is required.
6. Robotics, Automation, and Mechatronics
Lightweight end-effectors, joint housings, set screws for timing pulleys/gears/couplings, locking mechanisms for encoders/potentiometers, and anti-rotation devices for timing belt pulleys. Suitable for reducing moment of inertia when replacing steel components with aluminum, magnesium, or titanium; however, when pairing an aluminum shaft with a titanium flat-point screw, contact pressure must be calculated-using a hardened washer or switching to a ball-point or cone-point screw if necessary.
7. Energy, rail transit, and outdoor radar/telecommunications equipment.
Applications include small sensing and positioning components in wind, solar, and energy storage systems, as well as outdoor communication cabinets and antenna mechanisms; key advantages are weather resistance and light weight. It is not recommended to rely on set screws to bear loads in primary structural components or load-bearing flanges.
Precautions for Use
1. Thread engagement length: Ensure a thread engagement length of at least one nominal diameter to achieve sufficient holding power.
2. Mating surface requirements: The contact surface should be flat; rough or curved surfaces will reduce contact efficiency.
3. Tightening torque: Slotted drives have limited torque capacity; avoid overtightening to prevent slot stripping, thread damage, or screw breakage. Refer to the torque chart for the specific titanium alloy grade.
4. Vibration resistance: When used on rotating parts or in high-vibration environments, apply thread-locking compound (e.g., anaerobic adhesive) to prevent loosening.
5. Thread cleaning: Remove metal filings and oil/grease from the threaded hole before installation to ensure smooth engagement.
6. Tool compatibility: Use a flat-head screwdriver of the correct width; a driver that is too narrow or too wide can damage the slot.
7. Titanium alloy anti-galling: Titanium alloy threads are prone to galling; use copper-based or nickel-based anti-seize compound during assembly and disassembly.
8. Avoid impact: Slotted drives are not designed to withstand impact during tightening; do not install by striking the screwdriver.
